Welcome to

Julie Anne Snyder

The door to one’s mind is to examine one’s room...or cabin.

Welcome to the Captain’s Cabin! Glad to have you aboard. Let me give you a tour of my mind here in the room and then we’ll give you your jobs.

Walls
Art~Religion~Ships/Maps

On the walls you will see fantasy/sci-fi art and lots of prayer cards with neat pictures of the saints on them. Halfway around the wall is a 7-9 inch tall border starting on your left with the seven dwarves mining (although that may be painted over and redone soon) followed by a hunter and then three unicorns. The last unicorn is battling a small dragon. On the right of the doorway it’s nighttime where dragons reign, but with a whoosh of leaves there’re flower faeries and pixies flying on drakes (tiny dragons). After a large faerie face are Peter Pan and Wendy. The Pirate ship is in the background and mermaids in the foreground. Around the corner and hitting the window you see the ocean falling, it’s the edge of the world and there it stops.

Above the edge of the world is a picture of the agony in the garden called “Thy Will Be Done”. It helps me to remember that I shouldn’t try to do everything, even though I’d love to. I need to sacrifice my wants for God’s will. Over my bed is a list of all of the Lord’s titles on a big poster.

On the right is a painting of a ship (no, I didn’t do this one) and on another wall is a large map of the world showing all of the time zones and oceans for when I’m sailing the seven seas.

On the Right…
Music~Instruments~Plays

Of course the music is pumped up. Most of the time you’ll hear instrumental soundtracks, although ones like Clueless and Titan AE slip in every now and then. There’s some good ol’ Celtic jigs, oldies (gotta’ love the Beatles), some new age like Loreena McKennit, and also Christian artists. When I’m bored with borrowing rock from my sister and brother (like REM, Dave Matthews, Train Spotting) or listening to the Cranberries and Sugar Ray I listen to the radio. I’m always singing or humming along, unless it’s a tini-bopper band, then I’m either gagging or making fun of their music.

You see the xylophone in the corner? Well I use that to practice for the marching season and Jazz Ensemble in which I play the Vibraphone (it’s a xylophone except with pipes and a rotating metal piece). Next to it is my illustrious oboe which I play for concert season and my recorder.

In front of the instruments are many concert and jazz pieces of music as well as the whole score of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzanze and Ruddigore. My sister Emily and I were in Ruddigore this past February and March. We had a grand time not only during the practices, but on the road trips back and forth singing loudly and “partying” at red lights. I played a small “lead” named Ruth. I based Ruth’s personality on the character of Maria Lucas from A&E’s version of Pride and Prejudice.

Floor
Random~Books~Stories

The main mess is made up of books and papers, manuscripts, pics of Jeremy Northam from Emma and Robert Sean Leonard, as well as notes to myself that I generally forget about. On the floor is a scattering of laundry, dress-up (just because I’m sixteen doesn’t mean I can’t still play pretend!) and stuffed animals. King Arthur the koala bear leads all of the other animals, then comes Merlin, the little koala bear, and of course Eeyore is next, playing the role of Lancelot. Finally is Snowball, the white cat, in the role of Guinevere.

My four porcelain dolls are named Amy, Christine, Mary, and Emily. They look sort of like four characters in stories I am writing.

You’ll see lots of science fiction/fantasy books in my room as well as the classics. If it’s clean then I’ll probably read it. I also enjoy reading my sister Emily’s books since I’m her biggest fan club! She says I’m like Margaret from Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. I mean I like to climb trees and she likes to climb trees, I generally get myself all ruddy from romping around outside and she does too, but that’s besides the point.

On the Note of Jane Austen I love the movie Emma with Jeremy Northam in it! He plays Mr. Knightly and does such an absitively snugglrific job of making you fall in love with him! Clueless is based on Emma, which is why I probably like that “Mr. Knightly” or “Scott” as he’s called. Le sigh! Where have all the gentlemen and knights in shiny armor gone?

Well, anyways ::sniff-sniff-sigh:: If you look down by your left foot you’ll see a blue sweatshirt. Pick it up, will you? Don’t worry, it’s clean. Go ahead and read it. What’s Life Teen you say? Well Life Teen is the youth group I’m involved in at my church. We have a Mass every Sunday at 5:30 and then what’s called Life Night afterwards where we discuss world issues, faith matters, have a fun night or two, and then back to the beginning.

We in Life Teen go to many retreats such as Steubenville East, Pilgrimage 2000, CLI (Catholic Leadership Institue) and anything else that pops up. For instance we were at Bishop Fenwick's High School recently to "attend" World Youth Day in Boston in union with the Pope and the other TWO MILLION youth in Rome. We celebrated Mass at three o'clock in the morning, at the same time as the people in Rome. Being Eucharist centered, Life Teen is all about “bringing teens closer to Christ”.

Can I have my sweatshirt back now?

What are those schoolbooks next to you, you ask? Jeez, nosy aren’t we.

Just kidding.

Well, I’m homeschooled so I keep most of my books in the cabin. I’m in my second year of homeschooling. I started last year as a sophomore on my own decision and have decided to stay on for another year. I still see my friends in Youth Group and I go into the high school for Band and Jazz Ensemble (yes, I am a “band geek” and proud of it!).

Ceiling
Before you go, let me show you something. Hold on. If you’ll move so I can get to the light? Click. There we are! See all of my glow in the dark stars! Right up there is the Big Dipper and if you look in my mirror you can see the stars on the other wall. On each of the spokes of my ceiling fan is a star that spirals inward when it’s on and in the center steady part of the fan is the North Star. That’s the one we’ll be sailing by matey! When you leave report to First Mate Squid (the water faerie) and she’ll give you your jobs. Make sure the deck is well swabbed and none o’ that bilge-water excuses. Dismissed!

Oh, *do* e-mail the Captain!
